ChatGPT Hits 1 Billion Users? ‘Doubled in Just Weeks,’ Says OpenAI CEO. By Martine Paris. April 12, 2025


OpenAI’s ChatGPT is shattering records at an unprecedented pace. During a revealing conversation at TED 2025, CEO Sam Altman disclosed that ChatGPT’s user base has doubled in just a few weeks—hinting at a staggering growth trajectory that could soon surpass **1 billion users**.  

Explosive Growth: From 500M to 800M in Weeks. 
Altman confirmed that ChatGPT now boasts hundreds of millions of weekly active users, up from 500 million just weeks ago. When pressed by TED curator Chris Anderson, Altman admitted, “It’s growing very fast… something like 10% of the world uses our systems now.” 

This surge follows the rollout of several viral features, including:  
- Ghibli Mode: A wildly popular AI image generator that mimics the iconic Studio Ghibli animation style.  
- Memory Function: ChatGPT now remembers user interactions, evolving into a personalized AI assistant.  
- **Reduced Guardrails**: OpenAI has loosened restrictions on speech and image generation, prioritizing user freedom over heavy censorship.  

The Billion-User Milestone in Sight  
If growth continues at this rate, ChatGPT could hit 1 billion users by mid-2025. For context, it took Facebook nearly 8 years to reach that milestone—ChatGPT may do it in under 3.  

AI Agents & the Future of Work  
With OpenAI now valued at $300 billion, Altman emphasized the shift toward **AI agents**—autonomous systems that can act on behalf of users. When asked about AI replacing jobs, he remained optimistic:  
> “Through every technological revolution, capabilities increase. It’s not about replacement—it’s about augmentation.”  

Controversies & Compensation  
Anderson questioned whether artists like Studio Ghibli should be compensated when AI mimics their style. Altman suggested future models might include automatic payments for creators who opt in.
