# **Camping in the Wild Heart of Italy: A Hidden Gem in Abruzzo’s Maiella National Park** **By Nwabueze Benard**

When you think of an Italian getaway, your mind might drift to the rolling vineyards of Tuscany, the romantic canals of Venice, or the sun-drenched Amalfi Coast. But for those seeking something wilder, more rugged, and far from the tourist crowds, the **Maiella National Park in Abruzzo** offers an unforgettable escape.

Recently, I stumbled upon **Dimore Montane**, a secluded campground nestled in the heart of this untamed landscape. What makes this place special? It’s not just a campsite—it’s a gateway to adventure, history, and authentic Italian hospitality.

## **A Campground with a Story**

Dimore Montane has a fascinating past. Built by the Italian state in the 1990s, it was abandoned for years before being rediscovered during the pandemic by a group of friends—**Simone, Lisa, Fabio, and Manuela**. Together, they transformed the neglected site into a thriving retreat that blends rustic camping with boutique hotel comforts.

The result? A place where you can pitch a tent under the stars, stay in a cozy en suite room, or even glamp in a stylish bell tent—all surrounded by beech and chestnut forests.

## **Hiking Through History and Wild Beauty**

One of the highlights of my stay was a guided hike with **Lisa**, who brought the landscape to life with stories of **World War II prisoners** who once hid in these hills. As we walked through meadows dotted with wildflowers and past ancient shepherd’s shelters (*tholoi*), the dramatic scenery—golden hills, jagged peaks, and hidden caves—felt like something out of a film.

The **Orfento Valley** was another unforgettable trek. After a steep climb, we reached crystal-clear river pools, their turquoise waters shimmering under the sun. (Resisting the urge to dive in was nearly impossible!)

## **Food That Celebrates Abruzzo’s Flavors**

Back at Dimore Montane, the **restaurant** was a delightful surprise. Far from typical campfire meals, the menu showcases **Abruzzo’s culinary treasures**:

- **Arrosticini** – Juicy skewers of grilled mutton, crispy on the outside, tender inside.
- **Chitarra pasta** – Square-cut noodles drenched in rich ragù.
- **Pesche dolci** – Sweet "peach" cakes filled with custard.

Evenings were spent on the terrace, sipping **chinotto** (a bittersweet Italian soda) as the sunset painted the mountains in shades of gold and pink.

## **More Than Just a Campsite**

What makes Dimore Montane truly special is its **sense of community**. The owners aren’t just managers—they’re guides, chefs, and artists who pour their passion into every detail. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or a family, this place welcomes you with open arms.

And if camping isn’t your style? No problem. The **hotel-style rooms** (with plush beds and modern decor) mean you can enjoy nature without sacrificing comfort.

## **Final Thoughts: Abruzzo’s Hidden Gold**

As I left Dimore Montane, I thought about **John Broad**, the WWII soldier who called the Abruzzesi people the "true gold" of Italy. That spirit of warmth and generosity is still alive here—in the food, the landscapes, and the hospitality.

If you’re looking for an **off-the-beaten-path Italian adventure**, where wild nature meets comfort and history, **Dimore Montane** is waiting.
